The Smart VMC Bus Terminal in Vaughan, Ontario, features a sustainable, innovative design that uses wood to offer a warm welcome to passengers. Phase one of the largest redevelopment project in North America, the terminal connects the subway station below with the suburban bus transport, serving thousands of passengers a day. Dubbed a new kind of “urban magnet” by architect firm Diamond Schmitt, the building features a unique horseshoe-shaped roof that floats above two open, wooden platforms wrapped in glass. All of the structure’s exposed glulam beams and CLT are protected with Sansin’s environmentally friendly wood protection – one coat of KP-12W followed by two coats of Sansin ENS – adding to the project’s sustainable profile. Other eco features include a “cool roof” to reduce the urban heat-island effect, drought-tolerant landscaping, and lots of windows for natural ventilation and lighting.
