Sansin Wood Sealer Provides Ultimate Protection for Coastal Hotel

The Zorghotel de Egmonden in the Dutch coastal region of North Holland features fully-equipped and handicap accessible upscale holiday apartments for those recovering from surgery or needing special accommodations. Constructed by Tervoort and designed by Swan Art To Build, the curved thermally modified frake wood cladding is protected with Sansin Wood Sealer, which was applied by Sansin partner Leegwater onto their fire treated wood substrate, called Flame Delay FX Pro. The product aggressively repels water while allowing the wood to breathe and weather uniformly to a beautiful silver-grey tone that blends with the seaside surroundings. Wood Sealer provides exceptional protection that will withstand the exposure to sunlight or weather elements in this coastal climate.

Sansin Finishes Protect Nature-Centric Student Center

The New Student Centre Building at Laurentian University in Ontario, Canada, features a sustainable design that helps the building blend with its surroundings. The design team, comprised of Yallowega Bélanger Salach Architecture and Gow Hastings Architects, incorporated wood, glass and metal to create a comfortable living room-like gathering spot where students connect with one another and nature. Spruce and pine glue-laminated wood are visible throughout, running the length of the atrium ceiling to the underside of the large canopy. To ensure the character of the wood shines through and to achieve a harmonious look among different wood species, Sansin SDF and SDF Topcoat were applied on both interior and exterior surfaces.

Sansin Protects Laycock Park Pedestrian Bridge in Calgary

The City of Calgary’s Laycock Park Pedestrian Bridge in Alberta, Canada, features two 37-meter (121 foot) glulam girders made of Alaskan Yellow Cedar — fabricated by Western Archrib and installed by Volker Stevin. The bridge replaces one that partially washed away during a flood, reconnects the city’s north-south regional pathway, and creates neighborhood access to the parking lot. The design team, Parsons Inc. and FAAS Studio Architect, selected a three coat system from Sansin comprised of KP-12UVW and Precision Coat SDF and Precision Coat SDF Topcoat to protect the girders. Sansin products were selected for their ability to repel moisture, protect from UV exposure, hinder rotting, and withstand extreme weather conditions. Sansin finishes not only beautifully protect the bridge, but also are environmentally-friendly to meet strict requirements.

Sansin Protects Modern Rustic Getaway in Rural Washington

GUEMES ISLAND project

NATURALLY PERFECT® WOOD PROTECTION

This new 3,300-square-foot home, designed by H2D Architecture & Design and constructed by Carlisle Classic Homes, was built as a weekend family getaway on Guemes Island in Washington with a ‘rustic modern’ vibe. Beautiful wooden elements, coated with Sansin finishes and applied by Professional Finishes, offer eco-friendly, durable and easy-to-maintain protection. The rough sawn Douglas fir timbers, which stretch from the front patio all the way through to the back porch, were cleaned with Multi-Wash, allowed to dry for two weeks, and then finished with two coats of Sansin SDF in a dark brown custom color. The massive six-piece Douglas fir slider door was also coated in SDF to match the timbers. The custom-milled rough-faced tight-knot cedar channel siding was coated on all sides with a dark tailor-tinted tone of SDF, creating a dramatic statement. Inside, the custom-milled tight knot smooth face cedar ceilings and soffits were protected with SDF in a ivory custom color to beautifully contrast the dark timbers. Sansin Protects Kayu Wood Decks on Michigan Home

This 3,000-square foot home is nestled into a wooded setting in Michigan, mindfully occupying the space between the ground and the tree canopy. Designed by Mathison | Mathison Architects, the residence is deeply rooted in sustainability – from its placement and orientation to materials and features, including SIPS panels, triplepane windows, solar roof panels, and a live green roof for thermal mass and to control runoff. Sansin’s low-VOC finishes protect the Kayu wood decks at the front and back of the home that seamlessly link the indoor and outdoor spaces. KP-12 UVW, which provides UV and water repellence, was applied as the first coat. To enhance protection and build a low-luster, natural finish, two coats of custom-tinted SDF Topcoat were applied as the finish coats. Sansin Protects First Mass Timber Structure in Washington State

The five-story Catalyst building in Spokane, WA, is the first office building in the state constructed of environmentally friendly cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, which were sourced by Katerra. The 150,000-square foot project was designed by Michael Green Architecture to be one of the largest zero-carbon, zeroenergy buildings in North America. Catalyst anchors the new South Landing eco-district neighborhood in Spokane, which is a model for sustainable development and a place where business and academia intersect. To bring out the character of the wood and add to the sustainability requirements of the project, Sansin products were used throughout. Inside, Sansin’s KP-12 UVW and SDF Topcoat in a custom tint were used on the lighter areas while Purity Stain (Midnight) and Purity Glacier created the bolder accents. The exterior CLT soffits, as well as the Alaskan yellow cedar cladding and columns, were coated with KP-12UVW and SDF Topcoat.

Sited on the edge of a wooded bluff in the hills of northern California, this spectacular home was designed by Oculus Architecture & Design to appear as if it organically grew out of the terrain. The terraced back sprawls over the slope, complementing the natural contours of the hillside and showcasing stunning views. Curving exterior spaces are linked with terraces and stairs that seamlessly transition to the recessed interior spaces. Western red cedar siding creates a striking contrast to the concrete base on the exterior of the dwelling while cedar ceilings add a touch of warmth to the contemporary interiors. Primed with SDF Foundation, the wood is finished in Sansin SDF in an espresso tint, offering UV and weather protection in an easy-to-maintain, enviro-friendly formula. Project of the Month - Hayward Field

The stunning new Hayward Field – a “theater” for track and field events at the University of Oregon designed by SRG Partnership – showcases 462 Douglas fir glulam pieces manufactured by Western Archrib and protected with Sansin’s low-VOC, high-performing architectural finishes. KP-12UVW and Precision Coat ENS in a custom color were selected as a coating system for maximum beauty and maintainable wood protection. The project was funded by donors including Phil Knight of Nike, who competed in track and field events at the original Hayward Field while attending the university. Sansin Finishes Showcase Wood in Learning Environment

Project of the Month - TORONTO MONTESSORI SCHOOL

Capturing the natural elements of wood and the architectural interplay of light and space, architect firm Farrow Partners designed an elegant and welcoming new entrance, atrium lobby and office area at Toronto Montessori School, forming and shaping the wood to offer a fresh face to the facility. The design utilizes glued laminated Douglas Fir timber supplied by Timber Systems Limited located in Markham, Ontario. Sansin’s three-coat system – KP-12 UVW, Precision Coat SDF, and Precision Coat SDF Topcoat – was custom tinted to meet the exacting look desired by the architect, retaining the natural warmth of wood while offering superior protection in a low-VOC formulation. The interesting shadows cast by the triangular framing around the windows combine with the tree-like wooden structural elements to invoke curiosity and creativity.

Sansin SDF Protects & Highlights Beams on Award-Winning Home

The design team at Mira Timber Frame used a custom color of Sansin SDF to protect and showcase the Douglas Fir beams for a 1,500-square-foot modern farmhouse in Alberta, Canada. The open-concept timber frame home replaces an old farmhouse on the property, and utilizes natural materials that help it harmonize with the rural setting. The beams were finished with Sansin SDF at the Mira Timber Frame factory. The ease of applying the product in the shop, as well as the dry-time efficiency and low-VOC properties are reasons the company uses SDF. The owner appreciates the superior protection SDF provides, and the way the coating enhances the natural grain of the wood. The result is so stunning that the project recently won “2020 Best Great Room” from Log & Timber Home Living.
