Sansin Helps Foster Sustainability on University of Washington Campus

February 2024 —–
February 2024 project of the month

The Foster School of Business Founders Hall at the University of Washington, designed by LMN Architects and built by Hoffman Construction Company, is the first fully mass timber building on campus. Protected with Sansin, the greenest building at UW is an 85,000-square foot facility designed to achieve 76% reduction in cumulative carbon emissions. The mass timber is sourced from sustainable managed forests and finished with a system of Sansin’s low-VOC coatings that bring out the beauty of the wood while providing superior protection. The columns and beams were pre-coated with Sansin Eos by partner Western Archrib, and Purity Glacier was applied to the columns on-site. The glulam stair treads and landing on the signature staircase are coated with Sansin Eos, followed by a second coat of Sansin Purity Floor – Gloss with a final coat and desired sheen of Sansin Purity Floor – Low-Luster.

Black, Bold & Beautiful: Finish Line Cladding Collection protects UK home

January 2024 —–
POTM January 2024

This home in Surrey, UK, utilizes the innovative Finish Line Cladding Collection – the result of a unique collaboration between James Latham, Accoya Timber, Dresser Mouldings and Sansin. Finish Line is an exclusive range to James Latham that is available in 12 colors, including this dark shade, which was selected to counterbalance the greenery around the home. Designer Karl Harrison spearheaded the renovation. A new gable end creates more symmetry, and Finish Line Accoya cladding boosts the aesthetic appeal along the front of the house. Latham’s in-house manufacturing division Dresser Mouldings specially profiles, surface finishes and then protects the wood with Precision Coat SDF to offer superior waterproofing and color retention.

Sansin 2024 Color of the Year

November 2023 —–
POTM COTY 2024

Onyx is a bold, beautiful color that lets the beauty of wood grain shine through.

Sansin released Onyx as its 2024 Color of the Year. Onyx is a bold, primary or complementary color with an inky hue and powerful presence. Onyx is a unique dark tone that is offered in a range of transparencies and exterior products, including SDF, Dec, and ENS. No matter the substrate used, Onyx performs boldly with every coat.

“Sansin is known for manufacturing finishes that are aesthetically pleasing, highly protective, and easy to maintain, but our real talent is doing all of that without covering up the beauty of the wood,” explains Sjoerd Bos, Sansin’s Managing Director. “Even the deep charcoal color of Onyx doesn’t sacrifice what we all love most about building with wood – the beauty, personality and color impact of your specific wood type.”

Onyx is available for formulation in many of Sansin’s exterior products, including SDF, Dec, and ENS. Onyx can also be formulated for use in Sansin’s Precision Coat line, which is designed for use in a factory finish setting. Onyx pairs well with most of the other colors in Sansin’s line – from transparent finishes to a collection of solid hide colors.

Mass Timber Building Makes the Grade with Sansin

October 2023 —–
POTM Oct 2023

The Anderson-Ball Classroom Building at San Jacinto College near Houston is one of the largest academic mass timber buildings in the U.S. and one of the first mass timber structures in the greater Houston area. The 122,000-square foot building, designed by Kirksey Architecture, houses three floors of educational space for engineering, mathematics, College Preparatory, and early high school learning students. It is constructed entirely of mass timber, except for a steel bracing used for lateral support. The wood, which is visible throughout the structure, is protected and beautified with a comprehensive three-coat system from Sansin (KP-12UVW, Precision Coat Glacier Gloss and Precision Coat Glacier Low Lustre). The architect selected Sansin for its vast experience and solid reputation with mass timber projects.

Mass Timber & Sansin Team Up on Award-winning Arena

September 2023 —–
POTM September 2023

The award-winning Idaho Central Credit Union Arena at the University of Idaho serves as a national model for the use of mass timber for long-span sports facilities. The 4,000-seat arena is the new home for the Vandals basketball teams and a gathering place for a variety of school and community events. It is also a learning laboratory for students in the forest and engineering departments. The design by Opsis Architecture showcases the use of locally harvested wood and mass timber structural elements, provided by Sansin partner StructureCraft. The design of the soaring, doubly-curved roof was inspired by the surrounding landscape and was built using a large glulam portal frame and 140-footlong glulam king-post trusses. The facility also includes a three-level structure housing locker rooms, coaches’ offices, and alumni center, which was constructed with a glulam post-and-beam system and DLT panels. Sansin’s factory finish penetrating protective undercoat KP-12 was applied to all exposed structural wood members, and a coat of SDF Topcoat (natural) was added for extra protection. To bring out the beauty of building’s cedar siding and create contrast, some of the shingles were finished with two coats of SDF Onyx (27) and others were protected with two coats of Sansin SDF natural. All of the shingles received a third coat of SDF Topcoat (natural).

Mass Timber & Sansin Create Community Connection to Nature

August 2023 —–

Located in a rapidly growing neighborhood in Mississauga near Toronto, the Churchill Meadows Community Centre, designed by MJMA Architecture & Design, uses Canadian-made mass timber products as the focal point of the design. The glulam columns and CLT timber beams, manufactured by Sansin partner Nordic, reinforce the community connection to nature and to the park beyond. Along the full length of the park side of the building, the glulam columns link the inside to the outside, enabling visitors to look out through a forest of mass timber columns into the natural setting. The columns also extend outward to form a generous overhang, which provides shade for the playground and splash pad, as well as shelter for bicycle parking and the promenade around the building. The overhang is not only beautiful, it also filters sunlight, similar to a tree canopy, reducing the building’s energy consumption. The glulam and CLT feature stairs were protected with a complete system of Sansin’s architectural finishes, including: KP-12 UVW, SDF Topcoat (in ivory) and Precision Coat Topcoat (clear). The architect uses Sansin for its durability, breathability, and sustainability benefits.

Sansin Coatings Add Modern Touch to Home in Historic English Village

July 2023 —–
July 2023 POTM

This striking contemporary country house is set in the garden of a listed 16th century farmhouse in the Rothersthorpe conservation area of Northamptonshire, England. The dwelling replaced a 1950s garage to provide a new home that boasts stunning views across rolling fields. Greenaway Architecture designed the T-shaped structure in homage to the tightly clustered nature of the quaint village surroundings. The design also reflects the heritage of the conservation area with its traditional barnlike features, including vertical timber cladding, which is protected with Sansin SDF (in Driftwood 03). The timber cladding is carried inside the home where it accents the vaulted ceiling of the central dining room. Sansin was selected for its ability to bring out the beauty of the wood while offering superior protection in a range of color options.

Sansin on “Crew” for Award-Winning Rowing Pavilion

June 2023 —–
June Project of the Month

The award-winning Neil Campbell Rowing Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario, plays host to major rowing events, including the 2024 World Rowing Championships. It also provides year-round fitness and rowing training for Canadian athletes. Designed by MJMA Architecture & Design & Raimondo Associates Architects Ltd, the building boasts an innovative mass timber composite roof, manufactured by Sansin partner Nordic Structures. Spanning 62 feet – the longest manufactured in Canada – the CLT panels extend in one direction with glulam acting as a “web” to engage them in tension and compression. The roof structure is supported on slender steel columns and CLT shear walls. The design serves to seamlessly connect the athletes to the water and to meet both Net-Zero Energy Design and Zero-Carbon Emissions benchmarks. To protect the wood and showcase its beauty, a comprehensive system of Sansin coatings was applied to the mass timber, including: KP-12UVW, Precision Coat SDF Topcoat in ivory, and Precision Coat SDF Topcoat in clear.
