McPhillips Street Paint in North Winnipeg Offers Sansin’s Low-VOC, High-Performance Wood Finishes to Manitobans

Strathroy, Ontario, Canada – September 7, 2022 – The Sansin Corporation, a global leader in environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection, has welcomed another store to its dealer network – McPhillips Street Paint. Located at 2401 McPhillips St., Building 7 in Winnipeg, the store has started carrying the full line of Sansin’s interior and exterior low-VOC wood finishes.

Kenneth Tough, Outside Sales Representative at McPhillips Street Paint, had previously worked with Sansin products and lobbied for McPhillips’ management to bring in Sansin when he started working at the store. “Our clients expect us to have the highest-quality paint and finishes in the industry, and Sansin’s water-borne technology is simply the best in class,” said Tough. “For our area, the biggest problem is traditional oil finishes that start peeling within a year, but since Sansin penetrates into the wood it doesn’t chip or peel, which makes it much more durable and easier to maintain.”

Tough said that McPhillips is conveniently located for homeowners and contractors in North Winnipeg and also for cottage owners in outlying areas of northern Manitoba. “People come in on their way up to their cottages and ask for water-borne stain, and it just makes sense to take care of that market with a premium product like Sansin,” Tough added.

McPhillips Street Paint offers Sansin’s full line of exterior (SDF, DEC, ENS, Classic 1-2-3) and interior (Purity Stain, Purity Glacier, Purity Clear, and Purity Floor) finishes in a range of rich color options.

“We’re pleased to see that our reputation and Ken’s confidence in our products led to this collaboration,” said Caroline March-Long, Sansin’s Director of Sales & Marketing. “McPhillips’ customers expect only the best service and products, and Sansin delivers with wood finishes that offer superior wood protection that is durable, beautiful and easy to maintain.”

Sansin, Wood Finish of Choice for First-Ever Kappe Architects-Designed Home Outside North America

Strathroy, Ontario, Canada – January 21, 2020 – The Sansin Corporation, a global leader in environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection, announced today that it was selected as the exclusive provider of wood finishes for a residence designed by Kappe Architects under construction in Kleinmachnow, Germany, near Berlin.

Ray Kappe (1927-2019) was an LA-based architect and educator, as well as the founder of the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Kappe is known for his commitment to sustainability, use of wood, and airy designs that merge indoor and outdoor living. He pioneered the prefabrication of residences that embody Southern California Modernism, a design aesthetic that is carried forward by his sons Ron and Ray Kappe.

The home utilizes quintessential Ray Kappe wooden design elements: redwood imported from California, Douglas fir beams, iroko and red oak. All of the wood is protected with Sansin’s high-performance, low-VOC finishes including Precision Coat SDF.

“Sansin’s consulting and service was absolutely excellent,” says Lars Triesch, homeowner and founder of Original in Berlin, a mid-century modern furniture store. “We selected Sansin because of their experience with redwood – that knowledge is hard to find in Germany – and decided to use it on all of the different wood species. We couldn’t be more pleased with how it looks and how easy the products were to apply.”

Sansin coatings have a reputation for accentuating the beauty of wood while being easy to apply and maintain. Utilizing water-borne technology, the finishes sink deep into the wood, protecting it from within without harsh toxins.

“We are thrilled to be the finish company of choice on this impressive project,” said Caroline March-Long, Sansin’s Director of Sales & Marketing. “We are honored that Lars Triesch selected Sansin for the creation of a home and design that pays tribute to the Kappe tradition.”

Sansin Finishes Adorn Stunning Western Archrib Glulam Pieces on World-Class Track & Field Facility at University of Oregon

The Sansin Corporation, a global leader in environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection, and Western Archrib, a leader in the design, manufacture, and custom fabrication of glued-laminated (glulam) structural wood systems, announced today their products are showcased on the stunning track and field facility, Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

The open and airy structure is funded by gifts from Penny and Phil Knight and more than 50 other donors. The world-class facility gives athletes an unparalleled stage for competition and training and provides fans with a theater for track and field.

The newly reconstructed stadium, designed by SRG Partnership and constructed by Hoffman Construction, offers unobstructed views from all 12,650 seats. Elements of Historic Hayward Field, where Phil Knight competed in track and field events while attending the university, were incorporated into the new facility, preserving the rich heritage of the original stadium.

One of the main design objectives was to showcase Oregon history, culture and forest products. To that end, more than 462 Douglas Fir glulam structural wood pieces, sourced by Western Archrib and protected with Sansin’s low-VOC architectural finishes, were used to create 77 unique curves, each containing six pieces of curved wood. There were over one million linear feet of Douglas Fir lumber used in all the glulam pieces – equating to 830.5 laps around a 400-meter track. In fact, if the boards were laid end-to-end, they would stretch from Hayward Field to Oregon’s largest city of Portland and back again.

“This is an incredible mass timber structure,” said Mark Wigston, Senior Manager of Projects and Technical Services at Western Archrib. “It was a massive undertaking, starting with detailed and solution-minded team collaboration with the design group and trade partners. With the plan from the design group, we effectively and efficiently created 462 unique glulam members which are seamlessly integrated and showcased throughout the stadium canopy. This ultimately ensured we exceeded the vision and high expectations set by the design group. We were thrilled to partner with Sansin to provide the stunning glulam members for the project. By applying two coats of the Sansin finish in our shop prior to shipment, we were able to ensure the glulam members were protected in transit and in situ during construction.”

A three-coat KP-12UVW and Precision Coat ENS system in a custom tint was selected for its durability, beauty and environmental profile. The final coat of Precision Coat ENS was applied on the job site during construction.

“We are proud to be part of this iconic project,” said Caroline March-Long, Director of Sales and Marketing at Sansin. “We worked with the architectural team to develop a coating system that would bring out the character of the glulam pieces, while providing maintainable protection from UV and moisture.”

By the Numbers – Glulam Facts for Hayward Field Project

  • 154 unique glulam curves
  • 462 total number of glulam pieces
  • Deepest beam is 6’-9”; longest beam is 55’-10”
  • 1,900,000 pounds of glulam weight
  • 1,417 metric tons of carbon dioxide stored
  • 1,966 metric tons of total carbon benefit – the equivalent of 416 cars being off the road for a year

Sansin Launches Innovative WoodForce System to Create Barnboard Look & Vintage Weathered Effects While Offering Superior Wood Protection

Strathroy, Ontario, Canada – November 5, 2020 – The Sansin Corporation, a global leader in environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection, has released its new WoodForce weathering system with Intermix colors that allow for creative, customizable looks and effects.

See the WoodForce video for an overview: https://bit.ly/35DNEFO.

The WoodForce Intermix system is based on Sansin’s established Precision Coat formula that has been utilized for 25 years around the world as the leading weathered wood protection solution for large commercial projects.

The WoodForce system uses three products – Accel, Clear and Intermix with seven tints – to create an array of weathered looks and effects, all the while delivering exceptional water repellency and protection against UV, moisture, blackening, discoloration and wood rot.

With WoodForce, even new wood can be made to look weathered and aged without sacrificing the health of the wood. Unlike some accelerated weathering treatments, WoodForce doesn’t damage the wood fiber in the process of aging it.

“The weathered wood look is on-trend, but Sansin has taken it a step further,” said Caroline March-Long, Sansin’s Director of Sales & Marketing. “We offer an innovate system that invites creativity, but retains a focus on keeping the wood protected and easily maintainable.” March-Long added, “At Sansin, we believe you don’t have to sacrifice wood protection for aesthetics, and this product proves it.”

Designers, architects and homeowners can utilize one or more of the WoodForce products for unique results:

  • WoodForce Clear: This versatile wood coating applies clear and aggressively protects against water and UV damage while allowing wood to weather naturally to a silvery gray color.
  • WoodForce Accel: Designed to be used in conjunction with WoodForce Clear, Accel speeds up the effects of natural weathering while protecting wood.
  • WoodForce Intermix: Using seven base colors, Intermix is combined in various ratios to create 27 standard barnboard colors – or the user can create their own unique color. Intermix can be applied with a brush, rag or roller to achieve custom vintage effects.

Each product is environmentally friendly, VOC-compliant, Red List/CARB compliant, breathable, easy to clean with soap and water, and extremely easy to maintain.

Sansin WoodForce is available in a retail formula at select Sansin dealers and is also available in the company’s Factory Finish line for pre-finishing and machine application.

4 Tips for Successful Wood Finishing

4 Tips for Successful Wood Finishing

Wood is a beautiful, durable and versatile material, whether it is being used for millwork, cabinets, furniture, decking, or home construction. To help ensure lasting beauty and protection on your next wood project, follow these best practices.

Select a Suitable Wood Finish
Water-borne coatings are designed to penetrate deeply into the wood, rather than sitting on top, protecting wood from UV exposure and weather elements from the inside out. Water-borne finishes deliver outstanding color, durability and performance without the toxicity found in conventional stains. They are also easy to apply and maintain.

Prepare the Wood Surface
No matter the type of wood you’re working with, proper sanding is a critical first step to remove any mill glaze, open the pores, and allow the finish to penetrate. Use the proper equipment to evenly sand smooth wood the wood surface with 60-80 grit paper, and then use compressed air or a vacuum to remove the dust.

Follow Application Best Practices
Stir the water-borne product well (and continue to do so throughout the application process), ensuring there are no solids left on your stir stick. Test the color on a small, inconspicuous section of the wood to confirm you’re getting the look you want and the penetration the finish needs. Depending on the surface area you are coating, using a sprayer could be the fastest, easiest way to apply the product. For vertical surfaces, use a slightly upward angle and work section by section to apply the finish to the point of refusal from the bottom to the top. Use a high-quality brush to wipe away excess product, drips or runs. Follow the manufacturer’s directions on drying time before applying additional coats. Watch this video to learn more: https://youtu.be/n1QxTfRwWWk.

Be Proactive About Maintenance
The durability of a wood finish depends on many factors, including surface preparation, proper application, exposure to UV and moisture, the color of the finish (the darker the pigment, the more protection it offers), and the quality of the wood, just to name a few. As the maintenance time approaches, examine the surface of the wood every six months to check on the status of the coating.
