The Sansin Corporation Announces Ivory as Its 2025 Color of the Year

Strathroy, Ontario, Canada – December 9, 2024 – The Sansin Corporation, a global leader in environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection, is pleased to announce Ivory 21 as its 2025 Color of the Year. Ivory is an earthy, organic soft white with neutral undertones that enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain and brightens up any space. Ivory is a versatile color that complements many aesthetics – from coastal tranquil to Nordic minimalist, timeless traditional and many more.

“Natural, translucent colors like Ivory are trending as homeowners, builders, and architects seek durable finishes that protect the wood while highlighting its personality and allowing the character of the wood to shine through,” said Sjoerd Bos, Sansin’s Managing Director. “Ivory can be used to create a serene space on various species of wood with a range of undertones.”

Bos added that Ivory is available in several of Sansin’s environmentally friendly and low VOC premium wood protection systems, including:

  • Purity Glacier, a crystal-clear finish for high-wear interior wood surfaces
  • Purity 0-VOC Stain, a penetrating gel stain for wood interiors for interior settings
  • SDF, an exceptionally versatile protection for siding, logs, decks and fences
  • ENS, a durable two-coat finish that can be applied to virtually any surface, from windows, doors and railings to siding and decks – and even to improve the performance of other coatings.

Ivory can also be formulated for use in Sansin’s Precision Coat line, which is designed for use in a factory finish setting to achieve standardized production quality.

“Ivory is a beautifully subtle and understated color that enables the natural wood tone that so many of our customers are looking for,” explained Adam Bartlett, Sansin’s Color Specialist. “It can be accented with a range of the dark or light hues in Sansin’s color palette, and it looks particularly great on wooden ceilings.”

2024 Wood Design & Building Sansin Award Winners

Winning projects showcase innovative wood building design & wood protection.

Strathroy, Ontario, Canada – November 20, 2024 – The Sansin Corporation – a manufacturer of environmentally friendly, high performance wood protection for more than 35 years – is pleased to announce the winners of the 40th annual Wood Design & Building Sansin Award. The awards, sponsored by the Canadian Wood Council, recognize and celebrate the outstanding work of architectural professionals from around the world who achieve excellence in wood design and construction.

The prestigious Sansin Awards were presented to Patkau Architects’ Arbour House in Victoria, BC, and the Galien River Retreat in New Buffalo, MI, designed by Wheeler Kearns Architects.

“This year, the caliber of submissions was exceptionally high, making it extremely difficult to select just one Sansin Award winner,” said Sjoerd Bos, Managing Director of the Sansin Corporation. “We were so impressed by the innovative use of wood demonstrated by both of these firms.”

The use of hemlock wood, provided by Sansin partner Canadian Bavarian Millwork and Lumber, on the Arbour House from Patkau Architects is beautiful, Bos said. “This project used an adequate coating system for the exposure levels, and the creative use of wood and innovative arbor-like design elements are impressive. The KP-12 UVW and SDF Topcoat specifications designed for this project provide the appropriate level of protection for the wood, while meeting the design’s aesthetic requirements.”

Galien River Retreat features exposed glulam from Sansin partner Western Archrib, as well as natural-toned Accoya wood that blends well with the forested backdrop of the home. “KP-12 UVW offers the clear natural wood tone desired for this project, and the ENS topcoat ensures durability,” Bos said.

Sansin Announces KP-14, a New Vapor Permeable Barrier Coating for Wood

Strathroy, Ontario, Canada – May 29, 2024 – The Sansin Corporation has developed environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection for more than 35 years and today announced the launch of KP-14, a vapor permeable barrier coat for wood. Part of the company’s Precision Coat Factory Finish Line, KP-14 can be applied to engineered wood components like CLT to protect aggressively from moisture absorption.

KP-14 is designed as a moisture protection plan in conjunction with KP-12W for the exposed top sides of CLT panels. This system aggressively protects wood from water absorption while maintaining vapor permeability similarly to bare wood according to EN927-5 and EN927-4 moisture absorption testing. The KP-12W / KP-14 system offers vapor absorption desorption efficiency of 89% comparable to 92% efficiency of bare wood. This distinguishes KP-14 from other membranes that may entrap the water, possibly leading to mold growth, wood rot and decay.

Figure 3: A table of the water vapor desorption efficiency of KP-12W and KP-14 systems.

KP-14 is highly durable, and like most Sansin products is water-borne and low in VOCs. KP-14 is a clear coating and can be field or factory applied to the necessary level required to protect the wood and prevent weathering and water absorption during installation phase.

“Architects, engineers, and mass timber builders are committed to creating the best looking, longest-lasting wood and mass timber buildings possible. They are often plagued with moisture management challenges on job sites that can be extremely wet,” said Sjoerd Bos, Sansin’s Managing Director. “KP-14 holds water out similarly to a traditional rubber membrane, while costing a fraction of the price.”

Sansin Wood Finishes Protect & Beautify First Kappe Architects-Designed Home Outside North America

Sansin’s low-VOC wood finishes accentuate stunning Redwood, Douglas Fir, Iroko & Red Oak on interior and exterior of home

Editor’s Note: Photos of the Kappe Home in Berlin are available here. Please photo credit Jürgen Nogai.

Strathroy, Ontario, Canada – April 17, 2024 – The Sansin Corporation, a global leader in environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection, is pleased to announce the completion of the first-ever Kappe Architects-designed home outside North America. The home is in Kleinmachnow, Germany, near Berlin. Sansin was the exclusive provider of interior and exterior wood protection and finishes for massive amount of wood on the structure.

The residence was designed by renowned Southern California firm Kappe Architects and features quintessential design elements made famous by founder Ray Kappe. The home utilizes redwood imported from California, Douglas Fir beams, Iroko molding and Red Oak flooring. All the wood inside and outside the residence is protected with a comprehensive system of Sansin’s high-performance, low-VOC finishes.

  • Precision Coat SDF (on the Iroko, Douglas Fir and Red Oak): Specially formulated for factory finishing with oils and resins that penetrate the wood, Precision Coat SDF provides outstanding weather and UV protection. It creates a monolithic bond with wood for long-term durability that won’t crack, peel or blister.
  • Precision Coat SDF Topcoat (on the Douglas Fir and Iroko): Highly resistant to wear, Precision Coat SDF Topcoat doesn’t discolor over time, and enhances the UV protection – and beauty – of Precision Coat SDF. Because of its high solids content, Precision Coat SDF Topcoat enhances the look of the base coat with beautiful, saturated color and a full, rich finish.
  • Precision Coat WoodForce (on the Redwood siding): This high-performing factory finish provides exceptional protection and won’t break down with exposure to sunlight, retaining its water-repellency and protecting against weathering and wood rot. Because it erodes gently over time, long-term maintenance is easy with a fresh coat of WoodForce, as needed.

“We selected Sansin initially for its experience working with redwood – that’s knowledge that is hard to find in Germany. But as we learned more about Sansin’s products, we knew we wanted to use them for all the wood on the house,” said Lars Triesch, homeowner. “Sansin’s consulting service was excellent. The company supported us in finding the right combination of products for the protection and aesthetic we were looking for.”

Sansin’s Managing Director Sjoerd Bos says this home is an excellent example of what Sansin excels at. “We have a lot of experience collaborating with architects, contractors and builders to recommend a complete wood protection system that protects the investment in wood and brings out the beauty of the wood grain without the harsh chemicals found in other finishes,” he said. “It’s a magnificent project, and we were proud to partner with Lars to bring this one-of-a-kind residence to life.”

Sansin’s architectural consulting program, Sansin IRIS, helps architects achieve coating quality and maintenance goals. Completed projects are then eligible for Sansin Care, which offers guidance to ensure projects are proactively maintained.

The Sansin Corporation Announces Its 2024 Color of the Year: Onyx

Strathroy, Ontario, Canada – November 7, 2023 – The Sansin Corporation, a global leader in environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection, released Onyx as its 2024 Color of the Year. Onyx is a bold, primary or complementary color with an inky hue and powerful presence. Onyx is a unique dark tone that is offered in range of transparencies and Sansin exterior products, including SDF, Dec, and ENS. No matter the substrate used, Onyx performs boldly with every coat.

“Sansin is known for manufacturing finishes that are aesthetically pleasing, highly protective, and easy to maintain, but our real talent is doing all of that without covering up the beauty of the wood,” explains Sjoerd Bos, Sansin’s Managing Director. “Even the deep charcoal color of Onyx doesn’t sacrifice what we all love most about building with wood – the beauty, personality, and color impact of your specific wood type.”

Onyx is a confident and courageous choice for those who want to make a striking statement that never goes out of style. “The selection of Onyx as our 2024 Color of the Year reflects the rising trend for bolder color choices,” says Sabina Scott, Sansin’s Color Specialist. “With increased universal popularity in the US, Canada, and Europe, we project this dusky color will gain steam in the year ahead.”

Onyx is available for formulation in many of Sansin’s exterior products, including SDF, Dec, and ENS. Onyx can also be formulated for use in Sansin’s Precision Coat line, which is designed for use in a factory finish setting to achieve standardized production quality and cost efficiencies. Not only do Sansin’s exterior products protect the outside of the wood, they also prevent rot and decay by allowing the wood to “breathe,” which helps avoid moisture from getting trapped in the wood. Like all of Sansin’s products, these formulas have low toxicity and are low in VOCs.

“Onyx pairs well with most of the other colors in Sansin’s line – from transparent finishes to a collection of solid hide colors,” notes Bos. “Chesapeake, Driftwood, Pickled White, Crimson, Aztec, and even Clear are a few of our favorite tones that perfectly complement Onyx.”
