Sansin’s DEC graces award-winning Grange Park playground in Toronto

Toronto’s Grange Park playground won the 2017 Wood Design & Building Award hosted by Wood Design & Building magazine.  The Wood Design & Building Awards is the only program to award excellence in architecture in which wood plays a significant role.

The art-themed destination playground, jointly owned by the Art Gallery of Ontario and the City of Ontario, mimics an artist’s bustling studio with climbable, larger than life art tools (a paint can, paint tube, charcoal pencils and painter’s palette). Wood was chosen to allow customization/creativity, invite touch, and replicate the experience of play in the natural world.

Sansin: Provided Sansin DEC, which was selected for its performance, environmentally friendly benefits, and for its ease of use, and maintenance.

Sansin Announces FireStop, “Class A” One-Coat Flame Spread Protection for Interior Wood Substrates

The Sansin Corporation, a global leader in environmentally friendly, high-performance wood protection, announced a one-coat “Class A” fire retardant coating for interior wood including SPF plywood, Oriented Strand Board, wood trusses, glue laminated/cross laminated timbers (Glulam/CLT), construction studs and many assemblies where improved fire resistance is required.

As the popularity of wood as a building material continues to grow – for residential, multi-story building projects and mass timber buildings – architects and contractors have been wanting a wood coating that offers Class A fire protection, as well as showcasing the beauty of wood.

Sansin has introduced two products to meet market needs:

  • FireStop97 is a decorative, self-priming paint for wood substrates, available in white, pastel and light-colored wood tones. FireStop97 meets Class A flame spread ratings in just one coat and is fast drying, ultra-low VOC, durable and can be easily topcoated.
  • FireStop99 is a low-VOC, two-coat application with excellent adhesion. FireStop99 comes in clear or custom tinted tones for interior wood surfaces.

Both FireStop products intumesce (expand its film thickness) in the presence of heat or flame, creating a thick charred, heat-insulating foam layer. This action prevents oxygen from reaching the combustible coated materials (the “fuel”) and diluting combustible gases if released by the fuel. FireStop confirms to ASTM E84 and Canadian Standard CAN/ULC S-102-M88.

FireStop products are available through Sansin independent retailers carrying its industrial products and pre-finishing/machine-coating businesses.

“Wood has inherent fire protective properties through natural charring, but Sansin’s FireStop97 and FireStop99 provide heightened resistance,” says Sjoerd Bos, Managing Director at Sansin. “Sansin developed these products to meet the growing needs of architects and developers designing and planning mass timber buildings with safety, resilience and beauty in mind.”
